Koala with joey on back at Jarowair

13 December 2009

Brendon and I were over the moon to notice a female Koala with a large back joey, resting in the shade of a thick remnant dry rainforest tree at Jarowair!  This is our first sighting of a back joey at Jarowair and was just wonderful.  The photos were difficult to take due to the thick tree but are proof enough of this wonderful sight.

This sighting made for three koalas seen on one day.  See the previous post here.

Koala in tereticornis tree

13 December 2009

Brendon noticed this gorgeous koala in a eucalyptus tereticornis tree (one of their favourite feed trees) at Jarowair. It looks strikingly similar to the one photographed here on the 5th of December this month - what do you think? The markings on the legs and face are very similar.

Koala in rest tree at Jarowair

5 December 2009

I noticed this healthy koala resting in a large ironbark tree down the back of Jarowair while riding the motorbike with the dog. Koalas often use non-feed trees as rest trees, and ironbark are perfect, with the trunk, nice and grippy and plenty of leafy foliage for shade coverage.

This is the first ever sighting for us of a Pale Headed Snake at Jarowair - seen in the bird aviary on Melbourne Cup Night.  It was a very exciting sighting for us.  J & B

Long-Billed Corella visits with Cockatoo's 07/09/2009

A lone Long-Billed Corella was seen visiting the bird-feeder at Jarowair on the 7th of September 2009.  It was amongst a few Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos.  This is the first time seeing a Long-Billed Corella here.

Southern Boobook Owl & Baby Brush-tailed Possum 27/07/09

Night-time is filled with the sound of the Southern Boo-book Owl.  Its beautiful boo-book sound can be heard close by from its perch in the Iron-bark Trees.  On this particular night while looking at the Boobook Owl, Brendon spotted this young brush-tailed possum trying tirelessly to fit into the small hole of the glider box in the same tree that the Boobook was perched.

Wildlife Crossing Ahead! 22/07/09

While driving home I could see on the right hand side a group of Kangaroo's approaching the road. I stopped and grabbed my little camera just in time to get a great shot of them crossing the road in a line.  Photo taken just down the road from our patch.

Red-Backed Fairy Wrens at Jarowair, 22nd July 2009

Beautiful Red-backed Fairy Wrens in the thick grass on the edge of the dry creek bed at Jarowair.
These are the only type of wrens that we have had here at Jarowair so far, and what a species to have!

Brendon's Possum Box Project 13/07/09

Fab Possum Box made by Brendon 13/07/09

While Brendon has made many bird and glider boxes and installed them all around the property, this is the first possum box that he has created.  Note a much large entry hole.  I think he has done a fantastic job and hope sonme little Common Brush-Tailed Possum will love its new home.

Inside the Possum Box, note the sawdust on the bottom for possum comfort.
