There's an Antechinus in my Kitchen 26/06/14

After discovering some traces in my pantry up to 22ml long, that were clearly not from a house mouse, I realized that one we had a little native visitor hiding inside somewhere and that it was in-fact a rarely seen Yellow-footed Antechinus (Antechinus flavipes) . I set the "catch them alive trap" with peanut butter and placed in the pantry overnight and sure enough, in the morning we found a very unhappy female Yellow-footed Antechinus inside. I have heard before about antechinus' coming inside during winter, but this is a first for us and I must admit she was far more welcome than a traditional house mouse! After taking a couple of photos through the cage trap, she was released back outside in a thickly grassed area where there are plenty of hollow logs on the ground and she happily scampered into one. Re-purposed Hollow Log Nesting Box Installation

6th August 2017 These hollow logs, which have been salvaged (from trees that have been cut down in our local area for development) have been given a 'second chance' as a home once again for wildlife today at Jarowair. Brendon has turned the discarded logs into nesting hollows for birds, by adding sturdy tops and bottoms to the cut ends, which both had a natural side hollow entrance already, and has installed them here today in two different sized Eucalyptus tereticornis trees, ready to be loved again by local birds. Two different types of nest boxes have been crafted by Brendon, with different species in mind. One for Pale-headed Rosellas, and another larger log for Galahs. It must be time for a nesting box count again at Jarowair as I have well and truly lost count now of how many we have here - I estimate around 35+ different types of artificial homes for wildlife been installed here by Brendon in the last 11 years. Mottled Scorpion of South-East Queensland

While we have seen these little scorpions on occasion over the years at Jarowair, I have never stopped and photographed one. This little guy was cruising around on the front path late one night. I have identified it as the classification of "Mottled Scorpion", however there are three species of Mottled Scorpions in South-East Queensland, being the Lychas, Isometrus and Cercophonius spp , which requires knowledge from an expert to determine which one they are. Mottled Scorpions are found in moist forest areas and gardens. The Sting is not known to be dangerous - just painful! J.G. Mottled Scorpion - Jarowiar South East Queensland, November 2014
